How to Keep Light Fixtures Shining Bright?

Once a year it is important to wash all the dust and grime off your light fixtures. Some fixtures may be easier to clean than others and require different products to make them sparkle. For all of these projects, you are going to need a ladder, a warm soap mix, a sponge and some soft cloths and towels. A safety tip to remember when cleaning fixtures are to make sure the light is off from either the switch or the breaker.

Mounted Fixtures

A mounted light fixture is one of the easiest to clean first make sure the light is off, unscrew the finial and decorative cap. Next use a warm soap mix and a sponge to wash the glass and dry with the towel; once the glass is dry reattach the light. If you have a fan in your home, grab your duster and wipe down the base of the fan to remove any dust and wipe down the base of the fan and the blades with the warm soapy mix and a soft cloth. Before moving on wipe down with a towel if you have a glass fixture that is attached to the fan then use a glass cleaner spray on the cloth then wipe the glass clean.

Recessed Light Fixture

First, remove the light bulb so as to be able to dust the inside of the recessed area. A microfiber cloth can be used to remove the dust from inside the recessed light fixture. Care needs to be taken when wiping this fixture so as not to have a loosened container.

Iron Chandelier

Now the next fixture is an iron chandelier with lampshades; first, remove the shades and clean the fabric either with a lint roller or your vacuum cleaner. Next dust the base with your duster and use a damp cloth to wipe down any grime on the iron then place the shades back on the fixture.

Crystal Chandelier

When cleaning a crystal chandelier the first thing you will want to do is put down a blanket towel or a drop cloth under the fixture in case a fragile piece falls, then dust down the fixture and decide if you'll be cleaning the crystals on or off the fixture. If you are taking off the crystals make sure to note how the chandelier is put together and remove them in section and put them into a sifter or colander so you can easily wash the pieces in the sink and pat dry. Don't forget to wipe down the arm before replacing the crystals. One other tip to remember here is to replace any burnt-out bulbs you may have to maximize the light in your space.

Outside Light Fixtures

Outside light fixtures often times seem to be overlooked but they need to be cleaned regularly as well. A blower or a broom can be used to remove spider webs that may clutter around those light fixtures. Dirt and grime can also be removed from the glass fixtures with a mix of soap and sponge.
Cleaning the light fixtures in the house regularly helps to give a bright ambiance to the interior of the rooms as bulbs appear dimmer when there are dust and grime built-up on them.
